KATHERINE BRUNT LAUNCHES DRAX’S CRICKET IN THE COMMUNITY
The search is on to find the cricket stars of tomorrow – with the help of Drax Power.
The company is launching Cricket In The Community, an initiative to provide cricket coaching in primary schools as part of Drax Power’s support for education and to promote sports learning as part of the National Curriculum. The scheme is supported by Yorkshire Cricket Board.
Drax drafted in England Ladies’ cricketer Katherine Brunt to get the scheme underway at a special one-off coaching session held today (Wednesday 24 May) at Drax Community Primary School, near Selby.
Katherine, a star of the women’s game and the current Vodafone Cricketer of The Year gave lucky pupils valuable tips on batting and bowling.
She said: “I remember my interest in the game being sparked at an early age and this is a great way to get young people involved, but also to get them thinking about how sport can help them learn about supporting each other and taking responsibility.”
Cricket In The Community begins in June and involves two qualified cricket coaches visiting schools in the area to help pupils with basic skills and developing technique.
Coaches Paul Smith and Steve Foster, who both work at Drax Power Station, aim to visit around 12 schools in the area during the remainder of the summer term.
Paul Smith said: “Many schools have shown a keen interest in getting involved with the scheme and we’re looking for any new talent that might be out there.”
To help schools continue children’s interest in the game, Drax is also providing special cricket kits for practice in sports lessons.
Yorkshire Cricket Board development officer for East Yorkshire Paul Shaw said: “We’re pleased to be able to work together with Drax Power and Barlby Schools Sport Partnership to bring cricket to a new and young audience and hopefully increase more fans of the game.”
