FINAL - Honley (156) v. York (74)
HONLEY CROWN AN HISTORIC SEASON
Huddersfield League side Honley had a comprehensive victory over Yorkshire League side York. Honley had won a record breaking fourth successive league Championship, the first team to achieve the feat in league history, the day before meeting newly crowned Yorkshire League champions York in the delayed final of the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy.
Having won the toss, York asked Honley to bat first on a not unexpectedly soft track. It looked a good toss to win when in the 5th over Neil Laidlaw had opener Matthew Cox caught for 5 runs, then 2 overs later Simon Kelly was given out LBW for 4. Danny Howard was brilliantly caught & bowled by Nick Kay to leave Honley struggling at 28 for 3 in the 14th over. Only the stoic Michael Fraine really offered some resistance to the York Bowlers on a difficult track, eventually falling to an excellent catch by Captain Marcus Wood for 41. The only other batsmen to add significantly were Harlon Haye smashing a wonderful 35 & Captain Rob Moore with a reserved 21. Honley were eventually all out for 156 in 46.5 overs.
The York batsmen never got to grips with the difficult track and they quickly found themselves in deep trouble, reaching only 48 for 7 by the 15th over. Some aggressive bowling by Haye & steady medium pace by Howarth did the damage. The enigmatic Martin Green replaced Haye & with his medium pace finding indifferent bounce to mop up the tail. Only Alex Collins 17, Neil Laidlaw 15 no. & Dan Wilson 11 reached double figures. Perhaps York will be able to exact revenge next season as they both will be back in the competition.
The Stan Sones Man of the Match was awarded to Harlon Haye for his 35 runs, 3 wickets and a superb overhead diving catch.
