The Yorkshire Cricket Board is pleased to announce the Winners and Runners-Up in each of the categories named below. Presentations were made at the inaugural Awards Ceremony, held at Headingley on 21 September 2007.
Awards based on the ECB OSCA categories
Young Volunteer Winner Adam Cutmore, Brodsworth C C Aged just 16 and at Don Valley Sixth Form College, Adam has volunteered at his club for 3 years helping coaches and on the ground. A ECB UK level 1 coach already he has managed the Barnsley Under 13s side. In 2007 he took over all pitch preparation at his club with excellent results and also used his initiative to obtained a new batting cage through Doncaster Youth Bank. He has also broken through into his clubs 1st X1
Runner Up Dan Bamforth , Higham C C Dan is 16 and at Barnsley Tertiary College. He also has given 3 years of invaluable service to his club painting and helping on the ground. He has come into his own with the Under 11 and Under 13 teams and will take the ECB UK level 1 coaching course this autumn. “ His enthusiasm shines out in all he does - an extremely vital member of the club “
Another way Winner Ken Saul , Sewerby C C (Collected by Mr Roy Artley) Ken led a team which raised money by the Sewerby Gala links with local business obtaining help in kind and labour and with club voluntary labour halved the cost of the £300,000 new pavilion opened in July
Runner Up The Woolsley family , South Kirkby C C Gar and Trisj with their children Dean, Dale and Demi have raid £1000s for the club through 15 fund-raising efforts this year
Behind the Scenes Winner Terry Kavanagh , Spofforth C C Born and bred in the village, a committee man for 46 years ( secretary 15, chairman 8, treasurer 14) he has developed his club from a small village side to one running 4 senior and 6 junior teams including girls. “ The lifeblood of the club” and “ a perfect behind the scenes man”
Runner Up Brian Calverley, Hunslet Nelson C C Involved at his club for 30 years as Captain , treasurer , fund raiser and grounds man. Also managed the Heavy Woollen age group teams for 20 years. “ At times single handedly kept the club running “
Building Partnerships Winner Pat Flaherty, Shiregreen C C, Sheffield Area Council For a school partnership built with Activity Sheffield which has involved 2,000 children in Kwik Cricket festivals in his area in 2007
Runner Up Paul Payling, Frecheville C C Initiated link between club and Birley Community College developing a partnership of 5 schools with the club 16 and 17 year olds involved in community coaching
Leagues and Boards Winner Michael Crossland, Pontefract & District League An umpire for 40 years , involved also with fixtures and grounds, as League Secretary for 10 years he has expanded its membership from 18 to 35 clubs. “ The hub of the League”
Runner Up Trevor Coe, Craven & District League A League official for 26 years , being chairman , Secretary and Treasurer and now Fixture Secretary. Founded the League Umpires Association and Joe Lumb team
Lifetime Achiever Winner Kenneth Teasdale , West Riding Sunday Council Ken Teasdale is in his 57th year as secretary and treasurer of his League. Aged 84 he retired this year from umpiring after 40 years due to ill-health ( and was a football referee to 75). His league is now an all Asian League but they treasure him at the helm and his re-election is always unanimous
Runner Up Rod Heyhoe , Lightcliffe C C & Groundsmanship
Joined his club as an 8 year old, 54 years ago. 20 years on the committee, 15 as groundsman and 10 as secretary. Also on the Bradford Junior League committee for 30 years and Bradford League 17 years. Chairman of YCB Groundsmans Association since its formation
YCB Services to Sport Awards
Youth Representative Cricket Winner Adrian Grayson, North Yorkshire Schools, Bedale C C A coach for 33 years at club and Yorkshire Board Pathways level with outstanding service to North Yorkshire Schools who he has led and coached since 1964
Runner Up Michael Jagger , Huddersfield For unstinting service to Under 13 and Under 15 cricket and representative teams in the Huddersfield area
Coaching Young People Winner Jack Bethel, Sheffield Junior League & South Yorkshire A Coach of young people for over 30 years at club level, league level , area and district level and with YCB Pathways coaching up to 300 youngsters every winter
Runner Up John Cowan , Huddersfield An inspirational coach and manager with a special empathy with the disadvantaged who has retired this year after 35 years as a coach at his club Almondbury Wesleyans and in the Huddersfield area
Umpiring Winner Frank Richardson , South Yorkshire Now 91 years of age, has given decades of service to umpiring in the South Yorkshire and Yorkshire Leagues , tutoring and mentoring hundreds of umpires
Scoring Winner Rodney Annison, Booth C C Started scoring for his club as a 13 year old in 1951 and has scored ever since, also running scorers courses in Halifax and has been Club Chairman for 40 years
Runner Up Alan Gott, Long Marston C C Given outstanding service to his club as scorer for 54 years setting the benchmark for others
Groundsmanship Winner Brian Hobson, FrechevilleC C Groundsman at Frecheville for 50 years catering for 10 teams with one of the best playing surfaces in the area
Runner Up Brian Marshall, Spofforth C C Club Ground manager who has extended the square for juniors, enlarged the outfield by 15% and laid personally 300m of new drainage
Achievers
Disability achiever of the year Winner Allun Hughes England, Yorkshire terriers County Disabled Team Winner John Taylor England, Yorkshire Terriers County Disabled Team
Two young men with Learning Difficulties who both played for England in the Tri Nations LD competition this year. Allun regularly travels from Hull to the Midlands with four train changes which has should huge courage and presence of mind for one with his challenges. John from Bradford was instrumental in bowling Australia out for the first time and was Man of the Match in the following game
Good friends and impossible to separate - Joint Winners
Volunteer of the Year Winner John Baverstock , Shiregreen C C Only joined his club 3 years ago with his stepson, but plunged immediately into fund-raising efforts and was the prime mover in his clubs successful NatWest CricketForce project with many ground improvements etc . Has raised £1000s for the club and in 2006-7 hitch hiked from Sheffield to Lands End to John o‘ Groats to Sheffield to raise funds
Runner Up Kath Grigg , Barnsley C C A committee member for 20 years, being secretary, treasurer and now club welfare officer. Training to be an ECB Child Welfare trainer. “Volunteers to do the job no-one else wants including tea lady “
Special Award Winner Betty and Eric Chadderton
Amaranth C C , Wetherby League . Yorkshire Youth Cricket
Eric and Betty between them could have won scoring , umpiring, coaching , youth representative cricket, League and Board, Behind the Scenes and Lifetime Achiever Awards. Their service as a husband and wife team has been unique for over 40 years serving Amaranth CC, Wetherby & District League, Leeds Area Cricket Council, Yorkshire youth cricket from the Yorkshire Cricket Federation to the present, and the Yorkshire Cricket Association
